Selecting a pneumatic cylinder

• Bore — sets force. Force is approximately bore area multiplied by pressure, less friction. Size on the working pressure at the machine, not the compressor rating, and allow margin for seal drag.
• Stroke — long strokes in a rod cylinder risk rod buckling and side load. Consider a rodless or guided design instead.
• Mounting — NFPA interchangeability simplifies future replacement. Pivot and clevis mounts must accommodate angular travel.
• Cushioning — end-of-stroke impact shortens life. Use internal cushions, or an external shock absorber for high energy.
• Envelope — where axial length is constrained, a compact cylinder often replaces a tie-rod unit at equal force.
